New Art Gallery Opens In Lagos

The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola has unveiled the annual
Lagos Black Heritage festival with the opening of the new exhibition gallery at
the Freedom Park in honour of Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka.
At the opening ceremony, yesterday, the Lagos State State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola who led the event said the gallery is named Kongi's Harvest Art Gallery to appreciate the literary giant's role in the growth of African art and culture, home and in the Diaspora.
Kongi's Harvest is one of
Soyinka's most popular plays, and an iconic name in African literature. In fact
the Nobel Laureate is fondly called Kongi, by his admirers. The opening of the Kongi
Harvest's Gallery was also the beginning of the yearly Lagos Black Heritage
Festival (LBHF) 2012, of which Soyinka is the coordinator of the art and
culture segments.

Kongi's Harvest Gallery is located inside the colonial-built prison now
converted to a public use known as Freedom Park, on Broad Street, Lagos Island.
